living an unconventional life, one cocktail at a time

Giant bubbles in the park

I totally meant to post this LAST week and then, big surprise, I got distracted by something else and never came back to it…story of my life. Last Sunday (meaning the Sunday before last!) was a beautiful day for a birthday party in the park. Sweet Silas turned one and we helped celebrate with festivities at Watson Park, lovingly referred to by the locals as the train park because of the historic locomotive...

Happy birthday to me, parts two and three.

It’s been weeks since my birthday, and at my advanced age I can’t remember half of what I was going to say about the other two parts of my celebration, but I guess that just means that the stuff I do remember must have really been great. Right? The actual day of my birth– a Friday– started off pretty great, even though I couldn’t sleep in (toddlers don’t get the memo that mommies...

Happy birthday to me, part one.

Another year, another year older. It’s funny how I don’t feel any older than I did when I was 25. Except I can’t go out and party into the wee hours three nights in a row anymore without needing a full day week to recover in between. My birthday was last Friday, and I took the day off work. My old friend Chad– not old as in old, although he’s older than me, but old as in we met in...

My awesome husband.

Being married to a bartender has its perks. Last night, some of my college girlfriends came over to catch up over drinks. One lives in Seattle and I never see her anymore, and the others are in Kansas City and I still don’t see them as often as I’d like. We planned on sitting by the pool, eating dinner and drinking margaritas all night. What did my awesome husband do to help me out? What didn’t he...

Water Baby.

I think we have a little fish on our hands. Cooper got his first taste of the pool last night with daddy, in preparation for today’s Aquababy class. Decked out in a swim diaper and one of the gazillion pairs of swim trunks he has (all of which will come in handy this summer, for sure), he tried out his new inflatable turtle. He LOVED it. Of course, I think all he really wanted to do was eat the turtle....

Back from the Blogging Break.

It’s been almost two months since I posted here. A whole pile of things contributed to the break: taking care of a baby, returning to work after maternity leave, adjusting to a new schedule and, especially, frustration at the repeated hacks on this blog. Fortunately, my friends at Philsquare fixed the blog problem. If you have website drama, call them. They’ll help. Unfortunately, Philsquare...

Fun Things on Our Porch.

Our front porch has been a lot more active the past month. Between daily insurance statements and medical bills, boxes from Amazon with baby paraphernalia and the inexplicable multiple copies of phone books, I never know whether to be excited or scared when I venture outside. The best days, though, are when surprise gifts show up! One day, I went out to get the mail and found a box, a bag and a note from our friend...

Party Like a Baby.

Cooper went to his first party last night! And mommy got to get dressed up, fix her hair and spend time with adult people. (And enjoy a margarita for the first time in ten months. It was darn good.) Our friend Coleen hosts a post-holiday mixer every year. Since we’re all crazy-busy in December, she has her holiday shindig in January, and it’s seriously the party of the year. Amazing food, tons of...

Merry Christmas.

It’s Christmas Day! Merry Christmas from our little family. Although it hasn’t felt much like Christmas, we’ve enjoyed spending our holiday weekend at home preparing for baby’s arrival. And, we’re grateful to our friends for helping us have a fun and different Christmas Eve last night. Jen and Scotty host a party every year, one we can never attend because we’re always out of...

Baby Shower for Boys.

Co-ed baby showers are increasingly common, though the boys in my world don’t seem to realize it. Our good friends Heather and Michelle offered to host a co-ed baby shower for us that included Dave’s bar staff and friends. We thought this was a great idea, since many of our friends happen to be male and it would also be an opportunity for Dave to be involved in a shower. After all, it’s fun to...
