living an unconventional life, one cocktail at a time

Maternity Clothing, For the Win.

All of a sudden one day, none of my pants fit. I could still pull on a few pairs, fully unzipped and unbuttoned, and wrap a belly band around them, but I was constantly afraid that the belly band would slip around while I was at work and expose the unzipped zipper. Clearly, it was time for maternity clothes. Like any naive first-time mom, I headed to the maternity clothing stores. The Old Navy outlet thirty miles...

My New Favorite Candy, Tums.

I bet you didn’t consider Tums candy, did you. Neither did I, until I started popping them like jelly beans and candy corn. One of the worst parts of this pregnancy, besides swollen feet, is the heartburn. (Yes, those are the worst parts. And I fully realize they aren’t that bad. I’ve said it before— I’m lucky.) Anyway, the heartburn started about a month ago, an icky feeling of a burning...

An Uncooperative Child Already.

Our “fun scan” was today. That’s the 3D/4D sonogram that the doctor’s office offers for fun, and we’re amused that their office staff universally calls it the fun scan. The fun scan comes with pictures and video and, supposedly, great real-life views (in color!) of baby. Unfortunately, our little guy is already being a stinker, and he’s not even born yet. The technician tried for...

Fun with Baby Showers.

Our sisters threw a baby shower in my hometown last weekend. It was the first baby shower where I’ve been the “guest of honor,” which is always somewhat awkward for me. I don’t like to be the center of attention! Lots of people hate cheesy shower games. I am not one of those people. I don’t mind smelling “dirty” diapers to guess what baby product is in them. I like the mad-libs...

Wade Bowen at the Beaumont Club

A few weeks ago, our friend and concert buddy David invited us to go see Wade Bowen at the Beaumont Club in Kansas City. Under normal (non-pregnant) circumstances, this concert would have already been on our calendar and tickets would have been purchased. These days, I never know how I’m going to feel from one day to the next, but since we really wanted to go, I decided to suck it up and commit. So glad we...

Thank You Cards.

I have always been indecisive, but lately I am obsessing over the tiniest things. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent looking at baby playards or Pack ‘n Plays online. It’s embarrassing. (I finally picked one just so I’d stop looking at them.) Latest obsession: thank-you notes. We’ve started to receive gifts for baby and with baby showers coming up, the little 8-packs of...

Glucose Test, Failed.

I failed my glucose test. By TWO points. I think it might be the first test I’ve failed since attempting calculus as a college freshman. The bad news: I have to go back to the doctor’s office and spend not one hour, but three hours to take another test. The nurse who called me said to bring something to do. I don’t know what this test involves, but no doubt it will include more sugary drinks....

A Treat for Fat Feet.

The worst part of this pregnancy? Fat feet. I’m lucky. It’s been easy so far. Reeeaaally easy. No morning sickness, no wacky cravings, no crazy hormonal mood swings. (Please don’t hate me.) The only symptoms or side effects or whatever you call them have been extreme fatigue in the early months, mild carpal tunnel syndrome and ridiculously swollen feet. The swelling started in July and...

More Baby Milestones.

More important (to me anyway) dates that I feel compelled to document. August 6. My first experience with the thoroughly overwhelming world of kids’ consignment sales. A visit to the KC Kids sale in Lawrence — which thankfully seems to be one of the smaller consignment sales around. September 11. First actual maternity clothes shopping extravaganza. None of my pants fit anymore. September 17. Another...

Eating For Two. (Or, Eating Everything In Sight.)

To those of you who don’t really believe I’m pregnant because at almost 26 weeks along I barely have a belly, bless you. At my last doctor’s appointment, I discovered I had gained twenty pounds. Already?! I asked the doctor if that was normal, or too much or too little. He said it was a little on the high side (!) but not to worry about it. He was thoroughly unconcerned. I’m here to tell you...
