living an unconventional life, one cocktail at a time

Welcome, summer.

Summer is here!

Summer’s always been my favorite season– as a child, of course it was because school was out. It’s also because I much prefer being hot over being cold; though I admit, the older I get, the less I can tolerate the heat that seems to only be getting worse in our crazy part of the world.

For the last several years, summer has been even more amazing because of the above-ground pool Dave installed. While I was vacationing in Minnesota for a weekend, visiting my best college girlfriend and her family, shopping and enjoying Mexican food and margaritas, Dave was laboring in the heat back home: leveling out our yard, hauling dirt and setting up a giant pool that takes up half our backyard.

It was so worth it.

Our house may not be well-suited for indoor entertaining– it’s certainly cozy– but the outdoor party space more than makes up for it.

Four years later, we have a gorgeous deck; a shaded pergola; an outdoor kitchen area complete with two grills; and a fancy new window that opens to the outside, ready for a bar to be build underneath. There’s an outdoor stereo system, basketball goals and plenty of chairs. The hammock– last year’s birthday present– finally has a home.

Dave’s been working like a crazy person to add more security around the pool to keep the overactive toddler from climbing into it, and he’s also changed part of the deck so he can build a play structure for said toddler. Yes, we know, you can buy play structures. But thanks to a doting dad who just happens to be the world’s best handyman, our child will have every child’s dream playhouse.

Now, if only we can get that hand-me-down hot tub in working order…

Oh, my gosh – you have the back yard we’re working so hard to get! We moved into our house almost two years ago and are in the same situation: cozy house, awesome potential for outdoor entertaining. Reading your post has got me totally jazzed about yard work. Which is good, since we’ll be doing a lot this weekend. Ha!

We love, love, love our backyard. It’s taken us many years to get it the way we want it! And of course we’re still not done. Hope you got a lot done this weekend! I’ll have to go find some “before” pictures of our yard and post them…
